Diet and Feed Management Practices affect Air Quality from Poultry and Swine Operations

چکیده
This fact sheet has been developed to support the implementation of the Natural Resources Conservation Service Feed Management 592 Practice Standard. The Feed Management 592 Practice Standard was adopted by NRCS in 2003 as another tool to assist with addressing resource concerns on livestock and poultry operations. Feed management can assist with reducing the import of nutrients to the farm and reduce the excretion of nutrients in manure.

The Possibility for reducing Water Pollution resulting from Concentrated Animal Feeding operations and the impact of Phytase
Poultry, swine, and pre-ruminant calves have limited ability to digest phytate, the storage form of about 80% of total phosphorus in plant-based feedstuffs. The resulting excess phosphorus excretion in manure, upon application to farmlands, can leach into and pollute water bodies. Even so, a 1989 report to EPA on the costeffectiveness of Best Management Practices to reduce non-point phosphorus ...
متن کاملAn assessment of nitrogen-based manure application rates on 39 U.S. swine operations.
Water quality concerns and revised regulations are changing how confined animal feeding operations manage manure. Devising acceptable and feasible changes in manure practices requires a full understanding of the forces shaping current manure management decisions. Previous theoretical models have shown that a wide range of factors influence the lowest cost solution for manure management. We used...
متن کاملGas-to-Particle Conversion Process between Ammonia, Acid Gases, and Fine Particles in the Atmosphere
Ammonia emissions are associated with many agricultural operations including animal and poultry operations, waste and wastewater treatment operations, and fertilizer and manure land applications. The fate of ammonia released to atmosphere is affected by interaction with other gases, aerosols, and fine particles. These interactions affect the gas-to-particle conversion. This process alters ammon...
متن کاملNutritional and Feeding Strategies to Minimize Nutrient Losses in Livestock Manure
The livestock industry has undergone substantial changes in the past few decades. The poultry, swine, and dairy industries in particular have become increasingly concentrated. This has resulted in fewer, but larger, livestock operations throughout the country. As a result, there has been a growing concern about odor emissions from livestock operations and potential decreased water quality cause...
متن کاملRole of Thermochemical Conversion in Livestock Waste-to-Energy Treatments: Obstacles and Opportunities
Integrating thermochemical conversion (TCC) technologies with current animal waste treatment practices can treat and reduce quantities of manure from consolidated animal feeding operations. Additionally, TCC technologies can produce value-added, renewable energy products. These products can meet heating and power needs or be catalytically converted into liquid fuels. The primary objectives of t...
